A Cove of Whispers

A Cove of Whispers

The open road beckoned, calling us out to explore the winding roads of Autumn in the Finger Lakes. My trusty steed, a slightly dusty Jeep but favorite four-wheeled companion, hummed along, eager to explore beyond our familiar home of Watkins Glen.

A flash of blue and yellow caught my eye – a historical marker stood alone in front of the of the fall foliage and trees. “Dean’s Cove,” it proclaimed, hinting at a story waiting to be uncovered. Intrigued, I turned around, a sense of adventure bubbling within me.

Just around the corner, the trees parted, revealing a hidden gem nestled along the shores of Cayuga Lake. The cove, like a secret whispered by the wind that had embraced the Lake with open arms.

The tranquil waters of the cove mirrored the serenity of the surroundings, inviting reflection. The whispers of history echoed through the rustling leaves, reminding me of the layers of stories woven into this land. Once a thriving Cayuga village, with the name “Sawa-ya-wa-nah” now a peaceful sanctuary, Dean’s Cove held the weight of the past with grace.

In this tiny haven cradled by the vastness of Cayuga Lake, the cove seemed to speak, not in words, but in the gentle lapping of waves, the rustling of leaves, and the distant cries of birds. It spoke of resilience, of nature’s enduring power to heal and renew, and of the importance of remembering the past while embracing the present.

As I bid farewell to this hidden gem, a sense of gratitude washed over me. Gratitude for the spontaneous detours that lead to unexpected discoveries, for the beauty that surrounds us, and for the stories that connect us to the land and its people.

And so, I invite you, fellow adventurers, to seek out your own Dean’s Cove, your own hidden haven that speaks to your soul. Explore the backroads, follow the whispers of the wind, and discover the stories that lie hidden in plain sight. And when you find your special place, share it with the world, for the beauty of discovery is meant to be shared.
