2024 Cardboard Boat Regatta
August 27, 2024A Testament to Community Spirit and Resilience in Watkins Glen, NY
Two years out from the upheaval of lockdowns and safe distances, amidst a world that still feels a bit uncertain, the 2024 Cardboard Boat Regatta was a beacon of hope. The sight of the massive crowds, the chorus of laughter echoing across Seneca Lake – it felt like a return to normalcy, a reminder of the simple joys that bind us together as people.
Life presents challenges to us all, and tomorrow is never guaranteed to be perfect. But events like this remind us that when push comes to shove, we’re all in this together. We rally around shared passions, we uplift our communities, and we celebrate the wholesome fun that family-friendly events like the Regatta brings.
Walking through the crowds, my heart swelled with joy. To share that experience with my family, to see the mingling of friends and strangers alike – it was a testament to the power of community. And under a sky of brilliant blue, the event unfolded seamlessly, a testament to the dedication of the organizers and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make it happen.
To the brave souls who took to the chilly waters in their cardboard creations, I salute you! Your ingenuity, your daring spirit, and your infectious enthusiasm brought so much joy to those watching from the shore. You’re not just racing boats; you’re building bridges, fostering connections, and reminding all those watching that when we have the right support, we can accomplish anything.
Duct tape, as small a part as it would seem to play, is what strengthens the cardboard to the point of being seaworthy. The same can be said of individuals, when they work together to create events like these in our communities it is part of what holds us together and keeps us “seaworthy” against the unknowns. I am profoundly grateful to live in the Village of Watkins Glen where lighthearted wholesome family fun still tops the lists of things to-do.
To those behind the scenes and out in the front lines who work so tirelessly to make these events happen for the enjoyment of so many, we say THANK YOU!!! Sharing in the laughter and capturing these moments to share with others has been an absolute privilege for us and we can’t wait until next year’s Regatta!
